Suntory Hall Chamber Music Garden celebrates Schoenberg's anniversary with a virtuosic and gripping performance of his unique song cycle Pierrot lunaire, featuring Michaela Selinger as the moon-drunk clown. 

What do you get for the composer who made – and also kind of broke – everything? Arnold Schoenberg’s well-documented phobia of the number 13 aside, he could not have asked for a superior tribute in his 150th anniversary year.

This electic performance of Pierrot Lunaire was preceded by a clutch of contemporary Australian works (and a poem), which served to demonstrate that Schoenberg's modernity is still way ahead of the times.

On the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing, the musicians of Yellow Barn played a wide-ranging program of works inspired by the night sky. 

Mezzo-soprano and new music specialist, Katharina Rikus shuffled onto an elevated stage behind the ensemble in Pierrot make-up and costume to perform Schoenberg's masterpiece.

Arnold Schoenberg’s 1912 melodrama Pierrot lunaire is a work of many paradoxes. The main character, Pierrot, is a man usually sung by a woman; the instrumentalists serve both as soloists and as an accompanying orchestra; it is performed using a style of singing more akin to stylised speech than actual singing; and it straddles the divide between high art and cabaret.

The works featured in this concert, composed in 1912 and 1941, might be considered rather old fare for Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, but they remain as startlingly original today as they must have seemed back then. It was a pleasure to hear them in the brand new Elgar Concert Hall at the University of Birmingham in all its shiny, wooden splendour.

The year 2012 marks the 100th birthday of Arnold Schoenberg’s seminal Dreimal sieben Gedichte aus Albert Girauds “Pierrot lunaire”, more commonly known as Pierrot lunaire. To celebrate this, Stroma New Music Ensemble engaged one of New Zealand’s foremost young singers for Pierrot, and prefaced it with two works by Schoenberg’s pupils.

The seventh of the chamber music Proms this year brought together two of the greatest composers of the early 20th century. Though Debussy was twelve years Schoenberg’s senior, of the two works performed it is Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire which was written first, in 1912, with Debussy’s Sonata for flute, viola and harp following three years later in 1915.

Through its 24th season, the Amici Ensemble has stretched the limits of music; pairing its inspiration with food and fashion. In their 2011/2012 season finale performance, they incorporated artist Lavinia I. Voicu into the concert, having her paint live to the music. Much like her paintings, which were on display in the lobby, the musical programme was abstract and diverse.

As part of their Late Mix programme at the Sage Gateshead, Northern Sinfonia put on a performance of two dramatic chamber works, from either end of the twentieth century. Both works were due to be performed by soprano Claire Booth, but she was replaced by Rebecca-Jane Lea for Judith Weir’s Consolations of Scholarship and by Allison Bell for Schönberg’s Pierrot Lunaire.
