Ballett Zürich’s Junior Ballet, fifteen members strong from ten different nations, recently wowed an enthusiastic audience with a varied programme of five modern choreographers’ works.

With a witty and adventurous program and dazzling performances of each song, Stephanie Blythe and Warren Jones did not disappoint.

The company is called Heels Over Head and on Friday night I fell head over heels in love with their performance, Jacques Brel in Song and Dance. Using a combination of visuals, song, dance and theatre, four multi-talented girls celebrated the works of Belgian chansonnier Jacques Brel and brought early 20th-century continental Europe to the Cumbernauld Theatre in North Lanarkshire.

It’s not every evening that you hear a composition played on two serrated Nigerian Fanta bottles. Nor is it every evening that you hear pieces by Schumann and David Byrne (formerly of Talking Heads) in the same concert. Nor, for that matter, do cellists often sing. As this concert’s title suggested, ‘Uncharted’ at Kings Place was very much a trip into the unknown.
