The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment's beautifully curated selection of Mann-themed music enjoys mixed success. 

Stalwarts of American minimalism meet British Proms premieres as the London Sinfonietta checks the nation’s pulse

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment resurrected with 1926 silent film of Strauss' Viennese comedy – with the lost ending pieced together – and gave a commendable performance of the reduced score.

Two short works by Harrison Birtwistle put forward interesting views of classical themes: the psychologically involved The Corridor and a dynamic new vision of Medea, The Cure. 

An operatic thiller? Can such a thing exist? With an edgy score, Søren Nils Eichberg’s opera Glare tries hard to convince, at least initially.

This innovative and clever new opera by Julian Philips and Edward Kemp at the Royal Opera’s Linbury Studio Theatre is a delight, with appeal for adults as well as children.

Karlheinz Stockhausen has done rather well out of this weekend’s instalment of Southbank Centre’s The Rest is Noise festival, with his music featuring in all three of the concerts as well as the mouthwatering additional event “Breakfast with Stockhausen”.

This week the Linbury Studio Theatre attracted an audience of the more minute variety with its dazzling production of The Firework-Maker’s Daughter. Based on Philip Pullman’s novel, the two-act opera transported its listeners into the realms of the Far East with papery costumes, Indonesian shadow puppetry and hand-crafted pyrotechnics.

A split-level stage featuring an ornate stairwell and scaffolding was the setting for this the tenth Jette Parker Young Artists’ Summer Performance. Entitled ‘Veneziana’, the specially compiled programme embodied the visions of Venice dreamt by Rossini, Donizetti, Britten and Offenbach in six sets of Opera Scenes.
