This programme offered the chance to delve into some of the top composers from the US: Barber, Gershwin and Copland. Wayne Marshall proved a solid presence in Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F. 

The Elements brings together five composers writing for the celebrated violinist: Kevin Puts, Edgar Meyer, Jake Heggie, Jennifer Higdon and Jessie Montgomery. 

Prieto conducted the young musicians in three compositions from the 1940s which showed the budding talent to which we have to look forward.

Lisa Batiashvili and the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andris Nelsons offer an adventurous program of works leaving a lasting impression.

Eiji Oue doesn't quite convince in Bernstein and Copland, but Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto proves a winner. 

Fanfares and percussion: the NYOS play an all American programme of Gershwin, Copland and welcome back NYOS alumnus Colin Currie to play Andrew Norman’s Switch.

Upon entering the concert hall of Sydney Opera House, I was greeted by a plethora of percussion instruments positioned in all corners of the stage, along with multi-coloured ribbons, which were hanging down from the ceiling. They were in place for a performance of Toru Takemitsu’s From me flows what you call Time, for five percussionists and orchestra.

Adjectives that come to mind for your typical summer concert: fun, friendly, safe. Would any of those have fit last night’s Hollywood Bowl program? “Fun” absolutely works; maybe “friendly”. But “safe”? The centerpiece of the program – Alberto Ginastera’s wild Piano Concerto no. 1 – was anything but that. Try “daring”. Or even “dangerous”.
