Was that really the Czech Philharmonic playing at the Rudolfinum in Prague on Thursday night? If you closed your eyes it sounded like a dedicated Baroque ensemble serving up a thundering version of Haydn’s Die Schöpfung (The Creation).

The Czech Philharmonic has had something of an eventful history since its first concert, given under the baton of Antonín Dvořák in 1896. Since then, the orchestra has been conducted by a number of distinguished musicians, including Gustav Mahler.

The Last Night of the Proms isn’t really a concert at all; it’s two very different concerts put on one after the other. The first is something like what we’re used to from a Prom, with big-name soloists performing alongside the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Chorus in world premières and classic works from the repertoire.

Jiří Bělohlávek, who was indisposed for his first scheduled Proms performance this year (in his final season as Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra), was back on the podium to conduct a Slavic-themed programme on Wednesday night. There were many elements of the concert which I enjoyed, especially the grandiose and colourful arrangement of Smetana’s String Quartet no.

Tonight's Prom gave the chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Jiří Bělohlávek, the chance to showcase two masterpieces from his homeland, with the first half comprising the ever-popular Cello Concerto No. 2 by Dvořák and the second half, Smetana's epic cycle of symphonic poems, Má Vlast. The latter work, surprisingly, received its first complete Proms' performance this evening.

Reorienting yourself you realise there’s a queue a mile long, winding down the steps outside the Royal Albert Hall and stretching all the way to bus stop down the road.

Due to the snow, I arrived to the Barbican too late to catch Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks. However I made it in time for the premiere of Marc-André Dalbavie’s Oboe Concerto (BBC/Borletti-Buitoni Trust co-commission).The concerto is a highly varied piece which displayed some interesting composition techniques and contained a difficult part for the oboe.

In spite of Mahler's disapproval, his eighth symphony is forever tagged as the "Symphony of a Thousand" because of the immense choirs which perform it.
