Star-studded performance with acclaimed soprano Cornelia Beskow and internationally celebrated dramatic soprano Nina Stemme. Both have gained international success through their outstanding voices and great stage presence in the heart-rending Jenůfa, now back at the Royal Swedish Opera, directed by the head of the English National Opera, Annilese Miskimmon. Svenska Dagbladet wrote, »It is impossible to defend yourself against Jenůfa«, when it was first performed in 2017.
A passionate young woman, a murdered child and a strong, over-protective stepmother who wants to do well, but acts terribly wrong. Jenůfa is not only a powerful drama about women, it is one of the most heart-rending works on the opera repertoire. It is set in a closed, claustrophobic community where women must keep within the boundaries of their religion and strict gender roles. Although the opera was written around the turn of the last century, there are striking similarities to our own time.
