To open the LSO's new season, Barbara Hannigan sings and conducts music that sheds light on dark times.
The Programme
Uncanny and intense, Ligeti’s harmonies swarm into your ears in his Ramifications. Light and dark mingle in Vivier’s poetic, political Wo bist du licht (Where are you, light?), and Haydn’s minor-key symphony was inspired by Christ’s passion.
A tribute to an Algerian freedom fighter, Nono’s soaring aria is steeped in longing for a fairer world. It leads into Strauss’ tone poem envisioning the mysteries of death, and the hoped-for prospect of eternal life.
The Performers
LSO Associate Artist Barbara Hannigan transfixes audiences with her definitive, boundary-pushing performances. In the opening concert of the season, she both conducts and sings Luigi Nono’s Djamila Boupacha.
Critics praise Fleur Barron’s rich, honeyed voice. Her collaborations with Hannigan bring intensity and excitement to a spectrum of contemporary music.
‘Hannigan comes closer to having magic musical and theatrical powers than most singers on stage today.’ The Guardian, on Barbara Hannigan
