A worthy rarity: Erkel’s Bánk bán has its belated American première

Von Edward Sava-Segal, 30. Oktober 2018

The music, a combination of Italian-sounding melodies, German instrumentation and Hugarian dotted rhythms, was remarkably captivating.

The big heart and generous melodies of Ferenc Erkel's fine opera shine through in difficult circumstances in Atilla Vidnyánszky semi-abstract new staging at the Erkel Theatre.

A delightful confection: Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore in Zurich

Von Sarah Batschelet, 7. April 2017

The charm of Gaetano Donizetti’s spirited two-act L’elisir d’amore lies in its mixture of sharp comedy and poignant pathos. Zurich gave us just that.

Jonathan Kent's Manon Lescaut at Covent Garden: hard hitting staging, musically mixed

Von David Karlin, 22. November 2016

Kent's staging brings out the sleaze in Puccini's first big hit; Sondra Radvanovsky thrills in the title role; the musical performance improves through the evening.

While still a charming production, a touch more warmth and bel canto style are yet required to bring some authentic Italian sunshine to L'elisir d'amore in Bow Street this November.

Aleksandra Kurzak shines as Rossini's Rosina

Von David Karlin, 18. Januar 2011

Rossini's The Barber of Seville has been his most enduringly well-loved opera. It's in the top ten of operas performed worldwide today, and it has stayed at the top of the most-played lists even when many of his other works were little played.
