Verklärte Nacht sounded gorgeous in the outstanding surroundings of the Palacio di Carlo V, with the ensemble capturing the grace of the original sextet.

Effortless Vaughan Williams from Maria Włoszczowska, with atmospheric Musgrave and a blooming Schumann First Symphony.

Handel's oratorio Susanna is often considered to be less than consistently dramatic and this performance in the Halle Handel Festival did little to dispel that view.

It is a high order to mount a captivating performance of a work so widely known and performed as Handel's Messiah.

With splendid singing from Chorus of Royal Nothern Sinfonia and Quay Voices; Paul McCreesh’s B Minor Mass is full of joy but lacks emotional punch.

Paul McMcreesh leads Royal Northern Sinfonia and their chorus in a Messiah that deliveres all the intoxicating excitement of Handel's operatic writing.

There are few concert-going pleasures as rewarding as hearing a great conductor performing music he is clearly passionate about and inspiring those around him to ever greater heights of involvement with the music. This is what the audience at the Auckland Town Hall was treated to with Paul McCreesh and his interpretation of Elgar's Symphony no. 2 in E flat major with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

After Friday’s sublime performance of Handel’s L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato at the opening concert of 2013 Lufthansa Festival of Baroque Music, I am puzzled why this ravishing masterpiece doesn’t enjoy wider popularity (although it was performed recently at the London Handel Festival).

It’s a long way from modern Durham to renaissance Venice, from a cold winter evening in a small northern English city to a spring morning in one of the richest and most powerful cities the world has ever seen – but Paul McCreesh’s imaginative reconstruction of a Venetian Doge’s coronation mass made the leap almost instantaneous.

22 November, St Cecilia’s day, lends itself perfectly to music by two of Britain’s greatest composers. Henry Purcell and Benjamin Britten both wrote pieces to celebrate Cecilia as patron saint of music, and Britten was inspired and enriched by Purcell’s music.

Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah, first performed at the Birmingham Town Hall in 1847, was enormously popular in Victorian England. In this sense, the Royal Albert Hall, the grandest of Victorian buildings, is spiritually an ideal venue for this great choral masterpiece.
