Claus Guth's staging walks a line between atmosphere and audacity, in a powerful company achievement from Latvian National Opera.

A delayed season opening at the Teatro di San Carlo, but a night of epic grand opera as Claus Guth and Juraj Valčuha deliver a weighty Don Carlo.

Maestro Myung-Whun Chung leads an almost all-Italian cast in an impressive performance of Verdi’s most ambiguous masterpiece.

In Robert Carsen's staging, the “dead city” is absent: the scenery showing a bourgeois room that one imagines overlooking a bright avenue in Vienna or Berlin rather than a dark alley in Bruges.

The Komische Oper's new staging of Korngold's opera doesn't quite offer the necessary scale or atmosphere.

A wry and topical new version of The Beggar’s Opera from Robert Carsen and Ian Burton from Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord is energetic, fun and amusing.

La Scala might not have had all the right cards in its garter Tuesday night to prevent ending up holding aces and spaces, but it’s hard to play without a full deck in the first place.

The auditorium's lights flared up, drawing a blinking audience back into the room. The fourth wall was well and truly broken, and each of us was given no option but to acknowledge our responsibility for the planet.
