Bach’s Passion according to St John the Evangelist is not an easy work. Whilst saying I am a “fan” of Bach is one of the greatest understatements possible, this Passion is nonetheless an intense work for any concert-goer (seasoned or amateur) including myself. Over two hours in length, it is a test on both the audience and, quite obviously, the performers.

Bach, Brahms, Beethoven and Mozart: four insurmountable composers, each a titan of classical music in his own right. Every one of these composers would normally dominate a position of focus in a classical concert programme. It is rare, therefore, to see these composers side by side in a concert, simply due to a need for variety and not a heavy-handed evening filled with canonical works.

As I made my way to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, a mass of photographers and guests dressed in their evening best waited eagerly by the front doors. Alas, this reception was not for me, but rather for the Prince and Princess of Belgium, the evening’s guests and the very reason behind the concert.

Pour ce troisième volet du Ring proposé en version de concert par Yannick Nézet-Séguin et l'Orchestre philharmonique de Rotterdam, c'est le plateau vocal qui brille avant tout, éclipsant l'orchestre et le chef.

Sous la direction d'Andrea Marcon dans un programme qui associait Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach et Beethoven, la formation parisienne a montré un style engagé et élégant, au diapason d'Alexander Gadjiev splendide au piano.

Le pianiste russe parvient à transmettre aussi bien les sautes d'humeur, les zébrures, le rêve chez Schumann qu'à faire tenir ensemble le difficile cycle des 24 Préludes op. 28 de Chopin.

Dans la Sonate en sol majeur D 894 de Schubert comme dans la première des Années de pèlerinage de Franz Liszt, le pianiste suisse subjugue par sa manière de faire entendre toute la poésie des œuvres et plus encore.

Passionnants dans des extraits de Tristan et Isolde et Parsifal de Wagner, Les Siècles se manquent sur le piano choisi pour les concertos de Liszt, ce que Bertrand Chamayou ne peut pas compenser.

Créé en 2020, le ballet de Tchaïkovski repris et chorégraphié par Angelin Preljocaj va droit au cœur, mêlant habilement divertissement et avertissement.

Si la partition d'Offenbach n'est pas toujours un chef-d'œuvre et a singulièrement vieilli, la direction de Marc Minkowski, la mise en scène de Laurent Pelly et la distribution servent intelligemment cette belle redécouverte.

La « légende dramatique » de Berlioz fait l'objet d'une mise en scène peu convaincante mais l'orchestre Les Siècles et la distribution (Bernheim, Van Horn, Karkacheva) servent magnifiquement l'œuvre.

Dans les trois mondes bien distincts que sont les trois dernières sonates de Beethoven, le pianiste américain est exemplaire, soucieux du texte avant tout, laissant venir la musique à la vie.

Inégaux dans Strauss, Cristian Măcelaru et l'Orchestre National de France ont accompagné une Joyce DiDonato émouvante dans des lieder d'Alma et Gustav Mahler.

Si le pianiste trouve une sorte d’idéal de beauté intime qui convient très bien à certains aspects de son grand programme romantique, d'autres aspects de son jeu laissent perplexe...
