A very exciting evening at Poole’s Lighthouse with the BSO and artist in residence Sunwook Kim playing Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto together for the first time. 

Gianandrea Noseda, principal guest conductor of the Israel Philharmonic and former chief conductor of the BBC Philharmonic, made his Cleveland Orchestra debut this weekend in works by Rachmaninov and Prokofiev, and the Cleveland première of Nino Rota’s Trombone Concerto, with the orchestra’s principal trombone Massimo LaRosa as soloist. All concerned turned in solid performances.

It’s a fairly poor show that I hadn’t been to a Prom in years. Since it is all online and on the radio, there is the tendency to stay home and listen – but this concert was a reminder of quite how worthwhile it is to attend concerts in person. The power of live musical performance was exemplified by this varied programme, performed in a most varied and adaptive way.

Due to the snow, I arrived to the Barbican too late to catch Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks. However I made it in time for the premiere of Marc-André Dalbavie’s Oboe Concerto (BBC/Borletti-Buitoni Trust co-commission).The concerto is a highly varied piece which displayed some interesting composition techniques and contained a difficult part for the oboe.
