An awesome, detail-rich Rite of Spring from Aziz Shokhakimov in Strasbourg

An all-day Beethoven experience European style with both highs and lows: much diversity revealed and exploited but of variable quality.

After their terrific Troyens in 2017, John Nelson, Michael Spyres, Joyce DiDonato and Nicolas Courjal return to Strasbourg for a fabulous Faust. 

Nothing is better than when Berlioz ramps up the decibels. With a huge orchestra and choir and a deluxe starry cast assembled in Strasbourg, this was a special performance. 

Mise en scène sobre et efficace, interprétation musicale superlative : Le Miracle d’Héliane fait salle comble pour la dernière représentation proposée par l’Opéra du Rhin. Pari gagné pour Alain Perroux !

L'artiste new-yorkais signe une mise en scène intimiste, dépouillée et très lisible de l'œuvre de Verdi, tandis que Speranza Scappucci dirige l'OPS au plus près des chanteurs. La distribution en revanche est plus inégale.

La version proposée salle Favart revient aux intentions initiales d'Offenbach mais le texte parlé s'avère peu convaincant. Musicalement, Michael Spyres, souvent magistral, incarne un Hoffmann plein d'humanité.
