A stellar production of Die Walküre premieres in Zurich, not far from the location where Richard Wagner composed it.

Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s production has undergone a year of expert scrutiny before this well-sung revival.

Garsington Opera's new production of Rossini's comic masterpiece is a bawdy hoot, but humour aside it features an ensemble who provide first-class bel canto singing.

A compelling rendition of Dvořák’s infrequently heard Requiem. Conductor Ringborg brought the work to life inspiring both the RTE NSO and the chorus. They were joined by a strong quartet of solo voices.

Pour l'entrée de l'œuvre de Dvořák au répertoire de l'Opéra National du Rhin, la metteuse en scène Nicola Raab fait une proposition virtuose où la vidéo se taille la part du lion.

A welcome return to the Glyndebourne Festival for Melly Still's staging, which brings out the full emotional range of Dvořák’s fairytale of denial, heartbreak and forgiveness.

Neither Simon Rattle nor Magdalena Kožena could resist a tendency to add sentiment.

Interviewed at the time of this production's first outing, McVicar declared that “Entertainment is not a dirty word”. His Giulio Cesare remains a hugely entertaining opera production.

The view of Jesus as the archetypal left wing radical, champion of the poor and dispossessed and scourge of the wealthy forms the foundation of John Adams and Peter Sellars’ oratorio The Gospel According To The Other Mary. A strong score and outstanding conductor and singers make for an impressive première.

Of the “ABCs” of opera (Aida, Bohème, and Carmen), Bizet’s masterpiece is the one that has made the transition to pop culture ubiquity. Surely even the most oblivious of listeners are able to whistle along to the “Habanera” and “Toreador Song”. Furthermore, the melodramatic story of exoticism, lust and rejection is one of the most popular of operatic tales.

Of the various themes that make up Britten’s Gloriana, written to celebrate the coronation in 1953 and being given a rare outing at Covent Garden to mark the work’s 60th anniversary and Britten’s 100th, the most effective by far is a sort of operatic expansion of Shakespeare’s line “uneasy lies the head that wears the crown”.

The full name of Handel's opera is Giulio Cesare in Egitto: it depicts a historically loose version of Caesar's sojourn in Alexandria, during which Pompey is murdered, Ptolemy is killed in battle and Cleopatra is installed as Queen.
