Yuja Wang stuns the Gilmore Festival audience with a formidable program of Messiaen, Debussy, Scriabin, and Chopin – and a generous selection of encores.

A packed house and an anticipatory buzz greet Boris Giltburg in a programme ranging from poetic Chopin to grisly Ravel.

Stephen Hough performs major works by Schumann and Chopin, paired with the works of English composers... including himself.

Ukrainian pianist Anna Fedorova gave compelling performances of Chopin’s profound Ballades and intricate Waltzes, full of intensity, dreaminess and frenzy.

At Carnegie Hall, a lion in winter focuses on Chopin.

A risk-averse approach ruined the dramatic spontaneity of the Ballades but the 24 Preludes in the second half were much more convincing.

An excellent second half performance of Chopin's Four Ballades is preceded by an interpretation of waltzes and études that often lacks nuance of phrasing and dynamics.

At age 92, Menahem Pressler presented a demanding recital at Symphony Center. Results were mixed, but his reverence to the music was incontrovertible.

A dark thread ran through Yevgeny Sudbin’s recital at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, from the sombre B minor sonata by Haydn to Scriabin’s infamous “Black Mass” sonata and Saint-Saens’ virtuosic Danse macabre.

An inconsistent but ultimately satisfying recital from Benjamin Grosvenor in Rameau, Bach, Franck, Chopin, and Granados.

Benjamin Grosvenor presented a fascinating programme of works, demonstrating a profound musical intellect.

Manchester audiences hand out standing ovations once in a blue moon, but that which followed Lang Lang’s Mozart and Chopin programme tonight was the loudest and longest I have seen, after the brilliant Chinese pianist thrilled and delighted a sold-out Bridgewater Hall.

Yuja Wang’s latest recital at Carnegie Hall, which took place Tuesday evening, is best compared to a triple-decker sandwich with very excellent bread and questionable innards. Ms. Wang is known for her intimidating technique: powerful, playful, and superlative. Her energy is at its highest during her showy encores, and her pianism is at its most impressive with virtuosic Russian repertoire.

It is rare to be at a concert where one is utterly captivated from the first note until the very last has faded to silence, but such was the effect of Russian pianist Yevgeny Sudbin on a packed Wigmore Hall at his lunchtime recital of works by Scarlatti, Chopin, Liszt, Scriabin and Saint-Saëns.

An altogether warmer experience on Bonfire Night was enjoyed at Holt’s Auden Theatre, for a performance by one of today’s most successful and busy concert pianists, Freddy Kempf.

The excellent International Piano Series at the Southbank Centre continued with a fine recital of music by Haydn, Bartók, Debussy and Chopin by acclaimed and very popular (judging by the full house) Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes.

Love was definitely in the air at Freddy Kempf’s St. Valentine’s Day Concert. He gave a passion-filled performance of Beethoven’s Sonata in C minor, Op. 13, ‘Pathétique’ to open the night, which was fitting with the nature of the title. The true ‘Pathétique’ should have passionate expression that should be felt by the heart and transcend mere variations in tempo.

The first lunchtime concert of the Wigmore Hall’s autumn season featured young French pianist Lise de la Salle. With her 'glamour model' looks, Lise de la Salle could easily be dismissed as a “piano babe”, but at only 23, she is already making a name for herself, particularly through her recording of first concertos of Liszt, Prokofiev and Shostakovich.

London’s Wigmore Hall, famous for its elegant concert hall and outstanding acoustics, has become synonymous with exceptional piano music. Having played host to a number of celebrated performers and composers, from Arthur Rubinstein to Saint-Saëns, Benjamin Britten to Joshua Bell, Wigmore Hall also ushers in today’s latest classical stars. One such star is Boris Giltburg.
