Fazıl Say's Mozart is an acquired taste, but Paavo Järvi's Bruckner is a masterclass in how to conduct this composer.

Jansen lights up the Tonhalle with Bernstein's Serenade, while Paavo Järvi conducts Bruckner's Third Symphony.

Janine Jansen was the superb soloist in Brahms' Violin Concerto, balancing fire with refreshing mountain air before a bracing “Alpine Journey” with Bruckner's Third Symphony.

At London's new venue Milton Court, Kensington Symphony Orchestra played a mixed Bruckner 3 and an excellent Prokofiev concerto with soloist Nikolai Demidenko.

Concert reviews are of their nature very subjective and, indeed, sometimes it’s hard to believe that different reviewers were at the same concert. So it is always gratifying to be able to provide the reader with an objective fact: at over 90 minutes, this was probably the longest lasting performance of Bruckner’s third symphony ever performed – certainly longer than any recorded performance.

This concert, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Wagner’s birth, opened with that composer’s most influential phrase – the beginning of the prelude to Tristan und Isolde wherein the Tristan chord, which is reputed to have had such an unsettling effect on the harmonic language of all who followed, first stole upon the ears of 19th-century music lovers.

Saturday night, Avery Fisher Hall saw a solid and well-crafted final performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 25 and Bruckner’s Symphony no. 3. The piano concerto was cleanly executed and so polished as to allow the Mozartean patina to shine clearly through.

The Ebrach Summer of Music, Bruckner Festival is an extraordinary event. Ebrach is a small town, with a couple of shops, a café, an inn and a hotel, a disused railway line, a mere 1,000 occupants - and a gigantic Abbey attached to a monastery that was closed in 1803 and whose buildings now serve as a prison! At weekends, as you gather outside the Abbey before the forthcoming concert, the discons
