Bach’s Passion according to St John the Evangelist is not an easy work. Whilst saying I am a “fan” of Bach is one of the greatest understatements possible, this Passion is nonetheless an intense work for any concert-goer (seasoned or amateur) including myself. Over two hours in length, it is a test on both the audience and, quite obviously, the performers.

Bach, Brahms, Beethoven and Mozart: four insurmountable composers, each a titan of classical music in his own right. Every one of these composers would normally dominate a position of focus in a classical concert programme. It is rare, therefore, to see these composers side by side in a concert, simply due to a need for variety and not a heavy-handed evening filled with canonical works.

As I made my way to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, a mass of photographers and guests dressed in their evening best waited eagerly by the front doors. Alas, this reception was not for me, but rather for the Prince and Princess of Belgium, the evening’s guests and the very reason behind the concert.

Si la partition d'Offenbach n'est pas toujours un chef-d'œuvre et a singulièrement vieilli, la direction de Marc Minkowski, la mise en scène de Laurent Pelly et la distribution servent intelligemment cette belle redécouverte.

La « légende dramatique » de Berlioz fait l'objet d'une mise en scène peu convaincante mais l'orchestre Les Siècles et la distribution (Bernheim, Van Horn, Karkacheva) servent magnifiquement l'œuvre.

En associant Joséphine Baker dans un solo de Germaine Acogny et Pina Bausch avec son mythique Sacre du printemps, le TCE rend hommage à son histoire et à deux grandes artistes.

Martin Helmchen a déployé tout son talent, Thomas Hengelbrock n'a pas manqué de bonnes idées dans Dvořák, mais il a manqué un souffle spécial dans un programme somme toute peu cohérent.

L'ancien impétrant du Concours Chopin de Varsovie a donné un récital Beethoven-Schubert-Chopin captivant et frustrant, se montrant capable de franches réussites comme de fautes inexplicables.

Dans un programme conceptuel sous-titré « Prélude aux Préludes », le pianiste canadien a déçu, notamment dans des Préludes op. 28 de Chopin plus qu'approximatifs.

Virtuose accompli mais manquant de respiration dans Haydn et Schumann en première partie, le pianiste coréen a livré une ultime sonate de Schubert bouleversante après l'entracte.

Le metteur en scène polonais est à la tête d'une production de l'opéra de Strauss qui fera date, avec une distribution de rêve (dont Véronique Gens en Maréchale) et un orchestre au diapason.

En dépit d'une direction et de textes de liaison inégaux, le concert remporte un beau succès grâce à une fort belle distribution. 

L'art du duo est à l'honneur au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées dans le cadre de TranscenDanses, avec des pièces courtes mais intenses de Mats Ek, Samantha Lynch, Akram Khan et Sharon Eyal.

De Brahms à Schubert en passant par Beethoven, le pianiste de 85 ans a proposé un voyage d'une éloquence folle, sans jamais hausser le ton ou forcer l'auditeur à le suivre.

Dans un récital au (trop) long cours, le duo a souvent semblé déséquilibré, le violoncelle d'Edgar Moreau manquant de caractère au côté du piano somptueux et virtuose de Nelson Goerner.

Le pianiste et le comédien-réalisateur proposent un spectacle original, bien documenté et bien interprété... mais il manque cependant ce mélange de magie et d'imagination propre aux œuvres de Ravel.

De Mendelssohn à Stravinsky en passant par Schubert et Ravel, en quatre mains ou à deux pianos, le duo hollandais a subjugué par son osmose impressionnante et son jeu idéal.

Peu après Mikhaïl Pletnev et Alexander Malofeev, Nikolaï Lugansky est venu compléter le panorama de l'école russe du piano et montrer qu'il en était le patron, au fil d'un récital une nouvelle fois époustouflant.
