Bach’s Passion according to St John the Evangelist is not an easy work. Whilst saying I am a “fan” of Bach is one of the greatest understatements possible, this Passion is nonetheless an intense work for any concert-goer (seasoned or amateur) including myself. Over two hours in length, it is a test on both the audience and, quite obviously, the performers.

Bach, Brahms, Beethoven and Mozart: four insurmountable composers, each a titan of classical music in his own right. Every one of these composers would normally dominate a position of focus in a classical concert programme. It is rare, therefore, to see these composers side by side in a concert, simply due to a need for variety and not a heavy-handed evening filled with canonical works.

As I made my way to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, a mass of photographers and guests dressed in their evening best waited eagerly by the front doors. Alas, this reception was not for me, but rather for the Prince and Princess of Belgium, the evening’s guests and the very reason behind the concert.

Sous la direction peu investie de Franz Welser-Möst, l'orchestre viennois montre la qualité de ses pupitres mais finit par lasser, aussi bien dans la Symphonie n° 38 de Mozart que dans la « Pathétique » de Tchaïkovski.

L'art du duo est à l'honneur au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées dans le cadre de TranscenDanses, avec des pièces courtes mais intenses de Mats Ek, Samantha Lynch, Akram Khan et Sharon Eyal.

De Brahms à Schubert en passant par Beethoven, le pianiste de 85 ans a proposé un voyage d'une éloquence folle, sans jamais hausser le ton ou forcer l'auditeur à le suivre.

Dans un récital au (trop) long cours, le duo a souvent semblé déséquilibré, le violoncelle d'Edgar Moreau manquant de caractère au côté du piano somptueux et virtuose de Nelson Goerner.

Le pianiste et le comédien-réalisateur proposent un spectacle original, bien documenté et bien interprété... mais il manque cependant ce mélange de magie et d'imagination propre aux œuvres de Ravel.

De Mendelssohn à Stravinsky en passant par Schubert et Ravel, en quatre mains ou à deux pianos, le duo hollandais a subjugué par son osmose impressionnante et son jeu idéal.

Peu après Mikhaïl Pletnev et Alexander Malofeev, Nikolaï Lugansky est venu compléter le panorama de l'école russe du piano et montrer qu'il en était le patron, au fil d'un récital une nouvelle fois époustouflant.

Le musicien russe enchaîne des préludes fascinants par sa manière pianistique plus que par eux-mêmes. S'il se montre captivant dans Scriabine, Pletnev malmène tout de même notablement le texte de Chopin.

Dans un récital qui mêlait Schubert à Schumann et Brahms, le pianiste français s'est montré particulièrement inspiré, livrant notamment des Kreisleriana d'anthologie.

Dans Mozart et Bruckner, le violoniste et le chef ont rappelé les grands artistes qu'ils étaient, même si le poids de l'âge (164 ans à eux deux !) s'est fait sentir.

Si le duo propose des sonates très abouties avec une belle fusion des timbres, on regrette l'absence de contraste marqué entre Mendelssohn et Brahms.

Porté par de sublimes étoiles ukrainiennes, le ballet en deux actes propose un spectacle magique idéal en cette période de fêtes de fin d'année.

Avec Victor Julien-Laferrière venu remplacer Bruno Delepelaire initialement invité, le Quatuor Ébène a parfois semblé chercher ses marques, malgré de nombreux passages formidablement accomplis.

Le pianiste a livré une époustouflante intégrale des Années de pèlerinage de Liszt, donnant parfaitement à entendre l'évolution de l'esthétique du compositeur au fil des trois livres qui composent le recueil.
