A small, resonant crypt below a 1915 church in upper Manhattan lit by close to 100 candles lends a flourish to Glass’ unusually Romantic cello suites. 

The program, drawn from Kronos’s 50 for the Future commissions, ranged from the exotic to the complex, with students joining in for a Philip Glass string orchestra finale. 

Director James Farrah and writer Raúl Santos' realization of Glass’ Fall of the House of Usher is a work of unbridled creativity, an engrossing film which might have benefited from a bridle. 

The New York Philharmonic opened its season last night with a splendidly conceived mash-up of selections from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. Unfortunately, the first half of the concert was less compelling.
