The Australian conductor leads a superb performance of Bruckner’s Sixth paired with Steven Isserlis playing Schumann’s Cello Concerto. 

In the city’s sonorous Tonhalle, and under Parvo Järvi’s dynamic baton, works by Arvo Pärt, Ludwig von Beethoven, and Anton Bruckner make for a multi-coloured programme. 

With two very well-known pieces, could Gabriela Montero, Gražintyė-Tyla and the CBSO find ways of keeping them interesting? The answer was a resounding ‘Yes’. 

Rattle and the LSO clearly had great things in mind, as they played with characteristic polish and richness, with the Adagio of Bruckner’s Sixth a thing to admire.
