In this Royal Opera production of Gounod's Faust, there's no question about who's in charge. Not only does the devil get all the best lines, but he bosses the show from beginning to end. Clad in feathered hat, long curly wig and reminiscent of the Laughing Cavalier, René Pape plays Mephistopheles quite superbly, alternating between mercurial bouffe comic lines and extreme sardonic nastiness.

Véritable précis de monadologie aux accents newtoniens, dont l’acuité et la précision le disputent à la chaleur et au charnel dans un tourbillon de couleurs, le Cosí de Keersmaeker mêle savamment mouvement et harmonie dans un geste aussi chorégraphique que musical. Pour un résultat saisissant !

Hervé Niquet présente au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées son interprétation de Castor et Pollux (version de 1754). Le premier opéra de la saison était attendu avec beaucoup d’impatience ; malheureusement, il n’a pas été à la hauteur de toutes les espérances.
