This November, the Opéra de Montréal celebrates Verdi’s bicentennial with a laugh, presenting his comic opera Falstaff. The revival of David Gately’s production, originally produced by Glimmerglass Opera and the recently deceased New York City Opera, received no shortage of snickers during Saturday’s première performance with Opéra de Montréal.

Saturday night’s performance of Handel’s oratorio Theodora at La Maison Symphonique in Montréal was magnificent, probably the best concert I’ve seen this season. Les Violons du Roy, La Chapelle de Québec, as well as a handful of soloists from Québec and England, all under the masterful direction of Bernard Labadie, brought this somewhat obscure work vividly to life.

Every once in a while, I hear a concert that grips me from the first note and doesn’t let go until the very last. Daniele Gatti and the Philharmonia’s performance of Verdi’s Requiem at the Royal Festival Hall was such a concert.There are some caveats to make: I’m not catholic, I’m not very religious and I’m not particularly steeped in the tradition of liturgical music.

Following a string of misses, the Theater an der Wien emerges from its recent dry patch with a new production of Puccini’s triptych which offers a winning cast, the best playing heard at the house in months, and a smart production.

In the end, the big man gets the last laugh. Come to think of it, he also gets the first laugh, but for different reasons: you sense that Verdi steadily grew to love Falstaff in the course of writing the opera, as he turns from a coarse buffoon into a maligned old man and, eventually, into the spirit of laughter itself.

For the late night prom on Monday, the French early music group Ensemble Matheus led by the flamboyant violinist/director Jean-Christophe Spinosi brought an entertaining and well-juxtaposed programme of baroque arias and concertos starring French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky and Canadian contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux.

Très attendue depuis son annulation pour cause de Covid-19, la Tétralogie selon Calixto Bieito déçoit grandement pour son premier épisode, et ni la fosse ni la distribution vocale ne compensent cet échec.

Des forces orchestrales et chorales exemplaires, des solistes de premier plan et un chef inspiré : il n'a rien manqué à l'œuvre de Verdi, écoutée dans un silence religieux par une salle captivée.

À la Philharmonie de Paris, le maestro italien a montré sa maîtrise de l'œuvre de Verdi et fait briller les musiciens du National, dans une lecture splendide bien qu'un peu froide.

Malgré un excellent Andrew Staples, l'orchestre historiquement informé et son chef fondateur François-Xavier Roth ont proposé une lecture bien peu inspirée du chef-d'œuvre de Gustav Mahler.

Retour sur le deuxième volet de la Tétralogie bruxelloise, dans une mise en scène d'abord déconcertante puis superbe mais toujours prenante, rehaussée par l'interprétation musicale inspirée d'Alain Altinoglu. 

Même si certains procédés du metteur en scène italien restent incompréhensibles voire agacent, force est de constater que ses débuts dans la Tétralogie bruxelloise sont une réussite.

Les Épopées, sous la baguette de Stéphane Fuget, offrent à Marie-Nicole Lemieux une première incursion dans le monde du baroque français avec une certaine réussite.

Marie-Nicole Lemieux, contralto pléthorique offre un récital jubilatoire soutenu par un Roger Vignoles royal ; malheureusement la truculence déjà légendaire de la cantatrice semble bien mal adaptée à l’exercice du récital.
