This wasn’t just any concert. The Zurich Tonhalle’s new season was opening in a brand new hall in the trendy Züri-West quarter of the city.

Johannes Brahms' Piano Concerto no. 2 and Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations. Both solidly—not to mention stolidly—popular works. Safe programming choices. Maybe too safe. Both works are well loved. Well worn, too. Think of the Brahms. Every pianist of note that has ever lived (and will ever live) has recorded and played it.

I had never heard any of the music scheduled the evening’s performance and so I was excited by the prospect of the all-French programme, featuring composers whose music I am particularly fond of.

Die mehr als fünfminütige Kadenz spielte Kristóf Baráti mit schwingender Agogik, selbst in kräftigen Akzenten immer sonor, sauber im Klang und glockenrein – Ausdruck, nicht Eindruck oder extrovertierte Virtuosität.

Was die von Andreas Felber einstudierte Zürcher Sing-Akademie bot, war überwältigend: sehr eindrücklicher, homogener Chorklang, virtuos und flexibel in den polyphonen Partien, ausgezeichnete dynamische Kontrolle und Stimmausgleich: besser geht's nicht!

In den Ausbrüchen entfaltet Martin Grubinger eine Klanggewalt und faszinierende rhythmische Vielfalt, dass einem Hören und Sehen vergehen.

Trotz kleiner, jugendlicher Unvollkommenheiten ein bereichernder Abend, wofür der Orpheum Stiftung Dank und Respekt gebührt.

Bei der Konfrontation mit Zinmans Kernreperoire schien das Orchester zunehmend von der eigenen Leistung und der Zusammenarbeit mit dem Dirigenten getragen.
